How to Use Home Remedies for Constipation in your Child


Constipation occurs when you experience great difficulty in expelling waste matter or fecal matter through your rectum and it is occurs frequently among children, women and older people.

Causes of constipation

Children suffer from mild to severe constipation for various reasons, namely, inadequate consumption of water or fluids and unhealthy food habits, especially total lack of fiber in their daily diet.  
Sometimes, worms can also cause constipation.
Poor physical activity can weaken your child’s abdominal muscles on account of which the muscles lack the strength to push down the waste matter into the intestines.
Improper chewing or gulping down of food
Emotional and other mental issues are also known to cause constipation.


Home remedies for constipation

Give your child 4 or 5 dates daily, first thing in the morning


Give your child at least one serving of fiber enriched fruits like guava, pineapples, grapes and citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime and grapefruit. You can make fruit juices too.

Papaya is a fruit that is very useful as a laxative. It is very effective for killing worms in your child’s stomach. Consuming one cup of papaya (chopped) during breakfast, daily will activate your child’s bowel movements effectively. Raw papaya is also good as a laxative.


Another remedy is to squeeze the juice out of half a lime in a glass of hot water. Add a little salt to taste and drink it in the morning before your child has his milk or anything else.

Fennel seeds have laxative properties. Add 2 tbsps of fennel seeds in 4 cups of water and boil it until the water reduces to half its quantity. This decoction is very effective for treating colic pain

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV, is a good tonic and has many medicinal uses. You can give one tbsp added to a glass of water to your child, daily. It is used to treat flu and common cold as well.



Spinach Juice helps in stimulating the muscles of the intestine and eases bowel movements. Alternately, you can make spinach soup too. It is rich source of fiber and water content. Other fiber veggies are carrot, beetroot, turnip, pumpkin, cabbage and French beans. Make salads or soups adding all these veggies together.
 



Castor oil is a laxative very commonly used to give immediate relief from constipation, to children. Often, children throw up a fit when they are asked to take it, on account of its taste. Children over age 2 can be given 1 tsp of castor oil added to a small glass of milk. You can reduce or increase the dosage, depending on the age of your child
8 to 9 Raisins soak in water overnight, crush them, strain them and give the raisin juice to your child the next morning. It is good to soften the bowels.
Alternately, you can mix 3 tbsps of honey in a glass of lukewarm milk and give it your child on an empty stomach.
 
Eating bananas daily will always keep your child’s stools soft. Add bananas to smoothies or fruit salads.

 Unrefined foods like whole grains, bran, lentils are good for curing constipation. Add bran in your bread dough and pancake batter.

You know your child has constipation if his bowels are only once in 2 or 3 days. If stools are hard and dry, you child will experience severe pain. Try these remedies and you can be sure he will have smooth soft bowels.
