Top Health Tips for a Woman over 40

As a woman over 40, you must take extra care of your diet, eating habits and quality of physical activity. I have enrolled into a yoga class and have smaller meals about 5 or 6 times a day. It has changed my life forever. I feel young, energetic and active even at the end of the day. Yoga has changed my life for the better, physically as well as mentally. Here are some top health tips for you to look good and feel good always.

Change your eating habits. Cut down consciously on your calories and don’t skip meals to lose weight. It just does not work or help in any way.

Take calcium, iron & zinc supplements every day. Drink a glass of milk with Horlicks or Bournvita added to it. In addition, you must take calcium supplements, as your requirement of 1200 mg of calcium is not provided through food alone. All dairy products, especially yogurt is very rich in calcium. It may not be possible to get all the nutrients through food alone due to certain medical restrictions. Therefore, it is important to take supplements to fulfill your body's requirement of iron and zinc that helps to repair the body cells and strengthen your muscles and joints.

Do regular exercises, including light, weight-bearing exercises. There is no substitute to exercises as they strengthen your muscles and bones. They lubricate your joints and ward off the dangers osteoporosis and premenopausal issues.

Join yoga for mental well being. The breathing exercises (pranayam) and meditation is a powerful stress buster and will change your life forever.

Give priority to your health before tending to the needs of your family. It goes without saying that you need to be fit and healthy to shoulder the burden of your family’s well being. Women generally tend to neglect their own health in their concern for their family, especially the children.

Stop smoking and alcohol – They only serve in hastening your death. Smoking can expose you to cancers and premature aging. Alcohol causes premature ageing too in addition to serious cardiac problems.

Do your annual check-ups without fail and visit your general physician for clarification of any doubts you may have with regard to your health rather than looking it up in a medical journal.

Keep all your medical records and annual health reports in a file. You may need them in an emergency for an update on your medications, allergies etc.

Have a "Girls Day Out" at least once a month with your friends. Watch a movie, eat out, do shopping and have a great time. Forget others for those moments in time and indulge in making yourself happy. Trust me, its a great stress buster.

If you follow the above tips there is no reason why you cannot continue to enjoy good health and a happy life.
